Today while not a big day milage wise we had a lot to fit in visits wise. We left our hotel at 0830hrs to go to the Acoma Indian village. The visit centre was the first port of call where we picked up our boarding passes and camera permits; had a look around the centre and then boarded a bus to go up to the village which is atop a 370ft mesa. This village was fascinating! The story told by our guide is far too much to go into here but it kept us amused for 2 hours. All the homes are made of straw and adobe; there are only 11 families living there (on the mesa), the rest are living and working in surrounding cities/towns.
From Acoma it was to Grants and the Fire and Ice Rally. There were bikes everywhere. People were riding their pride and joy up and down the street to show them off; there were all makes and models present just about and they had all been personalised in some way; paint, air shocks, high bars to name but a few. It was really hot so we didn't stay too long but long enough to have a look, buy a t shirt and fuel before heading to Zuni and then the Petrified Forest National Park.
While getting to both of these destinations we were dumped on by a pretty big electrical storm; it made seeing through the screen very difficult but unlike poor old Mike I was tall enough to look over the top and get a clar view of the road.
Zuni is another indian village but the Petrified Forest is something to behold. The ride is was normal until you started to ride past these brightly coloured rock formations. This place is called The Painted Desert and boy did it live up to its name. From here we went to the actual petrified forest where logs of wood have been turned into crystal; absolutely beautiful.
We ended the day in Holbrook and have just come back from a lovely meal of ribs and Bud Light!
Washing is done so good night!
