Grand Canyon to Las Vegas
Up early this morning as we wanted to see the sunrise but alas there was too much cloud cover but we did get to see some local wild life, a Chipmunk! Judy went up to the grassed area in front of another hotel to see four more Elk, three male and a female, all juveniles.
At 0700hrs we headed off to again try and beat the desert heat into Vegas. Our first stop was for gas and a coffee. Most of us managed to get it right but two of the group managed to fill their bikes with diesel! Over hear the diesel pump handle is green and the petrol one is black, in NZ the 91 handle is green and the diesel is black; easy mistake but it meant emptying the tanks and refilling with 91; this put us back an hour. It's a funny system over here re petrol but 91 is there highest octane rated fuel.
From here we were staight to the Road Kill Cafe in Seligman, again on Route 66. The cafe had already taken our orders so when we got there it wasn't a long wait before we could eat after which we headed back into the centre of town to have a look around and do some shopping.
From Seligman it was straight to the Hoover Dam. It was bloody hot all the way to Vegas but by the time we got across the new bridge cutting out going over the dam, onto the road down to the dam, past the security gate, across the dam and up to the top car park we were boiling; it was 110 deg F, 40 deg C and we hogged the aircon in the shop. Jude and I had a drink and an ice cream, took our photos and then it was back onto the bike for Vegas.
Riding up the Las Vegas Boulevard (The Strip) is something to behold but not repeated at 40 deg C temps. The stop starting at the lights overheated a couple of the bikes by the time we got to the Paris Hotel and Casino; Mike couldn't start his again so it had to cool down first. Harley's now shut down the back cylinder when the temp gets too hot which makes them run rough.
The first night on the Strip was great. Judy, John, Lesley and myself went with Denny and Jo to have a look at Caesar's Palace and boy wasn't it worth a look! The inside was constructed to look like Italy and there was shops galore. We had something to eat then went and had a look at the water show outside the MGM
